Thank you for your interest in InfoGenie™. InfoGenie™ requires System 7.
In order to reduce the size of the demo application, we have removed the following functions: printing, label editing (Label View), envelope editing (Envelope View), and phone dialing. You can get some idea of the missing features by scanning through the various topics in the InfoGenie Help dialog, which is explained below.
Running the Easy Install option from the Installer will put the following items on you hard drive:
1. InfoGenie™ Demo Folder—inside this folder is the InfoGenie™ Demo application and a Datafiles folder. The Datafiles folder contains two sample datafiles: Sample Field Datafile and Sample Freeform Datafile.
2. InfoGenie™ Help—you can access the Help file at any time by typing command-? (or command-/), by typing the help key, or by clicking the ? button in an InfoGenie Basic View window. The Help dialog has a pop-up menu of help topics that you can read through. The dialog opens to the topic which relates to whatever window you are currently in.
3. Macintosh Drag and Drop—if you are on a Macintosh running a System earlier than 7.5 this will be placed in your Extensions folder.
The easiest way to get the InfoGenie demo running is to open the Datafiles folder and click on either of the sample datafiles. Click the Help button in the File Preferences dialog to see what settings you should make. When InfoGenie runs, select Open from the Files menu, and open the other datafile. Once a datafile is opened, its name will appear in InfoGenie's Datafiles menu, and you can open it by selecting it from the datafile menu.
The first thing to do is to select Preferences from the Edit menu. Click the General Program Preferences button. Again, click the Help button in the next dialog for instructions. You may also set Phone Dialing Preferences and Quick Envelope Preferences just to get an idea of what is available in the full-featured version of InfoGenie, although you will not be able to make use of the the dialing and printing features. Remember to click the Help button whenever one appears in a dialog.
After that, it's just a question of clicking buttons or selecting menu items to see what can be done. You can also turn on balloon help by selecting Show Balloons in the ? menu (second from the right in the menu bar). Then move the cursor around the datafile windows to see what the various window items do. You can turn off balloon help by selecting Hide Balloons in the ? menu.
You can import tab-delimited files created in other database and PIM applications. Of course, you can create new datafiles in either freeform or field-based formats.
QuickDEX users can open their card decks directly in InfoGenie.
With the Sample Field Datafile selected, be sure to select List View from the Views window and use balloon help to see what can be done in the List View window. Try changing the font to 9-point Geneva. Select List Layout from the Edit menu to see how you can modify the list. While in List View, hold down the shift key and click in a column header to expand all the column widths. Balloon help is particularly useful in getting around this window. To get back to the other view, select Basic View from the Views menu. Note that List View is available only for field-based datafiles, not for freeform datafiles.
The full-featured version of InfoGenie™ includes native versions both for Power Macintoshes and for 680x0-based Macintoshes. In order to save space, the demo does not contain native Power Macintosh code. This means that the full-featured version will run faster on a Power Macintosh. The full-featured version also includes a variety of decorative fonts, and several additional sample datafiles.
